From the Center of the City


The Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, in the San Cristobal Hill is one of the biggest attractions of the city, which attracts many bilievers, it is on of the main temples of the Catholic Church in Chile.
"La Virgen del Carmen" is the patron sait of Chile, as well as in Brazil it is the Christ The Redeemer, and this great icon represents a height of 863 meters above the sea.
To reacj this place you can either walk up through the funicular up the hill.
the image of the Immaculate Conception is 14 meters high and the pedestal on wich sits 8.30 meters... on its pedestal is a small chapel, wich, on April 1, 1987, SS John Paul II prayed and blessed yhe city of Santiago. The image is illuminated at night by electric lights placed on their sides, so it can be observed from all over the capital of Chile during the day and night. The model of the image belongs to the Italian sculptor Jacometti, and is similar to conditions found in Sapin's Square in Rome. It was built in cast iron by Val D'Osne Foundry, Paris by the French Ambassador Henri Salvador Sanfuentes. At the foot of the image, is an amphiteather to officiate mass or other religious office.
